About The Project

A Collaborative Artistic Journey

In 2013, I was commissioned to create a large-scale mural for my former primary school, Ysgol Gwynfryn, as a way to revitalize the exterior wall and engage the school community in a creative project. This initiative aimed to celebrate the school's identity, values, and the spirit of collaboration by directly involving the pupils in the design process.

Concept & Collaboration

The mural was designed as a collaborative artwork, where the children at Ysgol Gwynfryn contributed their own artistic ideas. The students were encouraged to create individual elements representing their school, hobbies, and local culture, which I then carefully integrated into a cohesive collage. One of the key objectives was to maintain the playful, childlike style that the children naturally incorporated into their drawings, ensuring that the final piece remained true to their vision.

Process & Execution

Over the course of three days, I transformed the children's designs into a large-scale mural, working to blend their unique contributions into a vibrant, storytelling composition. The mural featured bright, engaging colors and elements such as:

  • The Welsh countryside and mountains

  • Rugby and other sports themes

  • Symbols of nature, recycling, and sustainability

  • The Welsh flag and cultural emblems

Despite the challenge of working on an uneven surface and incorporating multiple styles into a unified piece, the project was completed on schedule.

Community Response

The mural received overwhelmingly positive feedback from pupils, parents, and staff, becoming a cherished part of the school's identity. It served not only as a decorative feature but also as a testament to creativity, teamwork, and school pride. The children took great pride in seeing their ideas brought to life, and the mural remained a talking point for the school community for years to come.

Reflection

This project was an incredibly fulfilling experience, allowing me to apply both artistic and project management skills while giving back to my primary school. It reinforced the power of community-driven art and demonstrated how collaborative creativity can leave a lasting impact.
